There's a legend about
Burano: a fisherman that leaved from Murano without his girlfriend,
arrived with the boat in a place full of Sirens. All the fisherman on the
boat plunged in the sea for reaching them. The only one who resisted was
the one falled in love.
The queen of the sirens was incredule to see this and with her tail she
created from the sea a wave of foam that became solid and get the bridal
veil of the away lover. From this event all the girls of Burano with great
maestry are going to reproduce by their own hands that bridal veil.
Famous for its lace industry, Burano is a pretty fishing village, its
streets and canales lined with bright, pastel-coloured houses.
They say the bonbon colours have their origins in the fishermen,s desire
to be able to see their own houses when heading home from a day at sea.
Regardless of the reasons, the bright, gray colours are engaging. Given the
island distance from Venice (around 40 minutes by Vaporetto) you really do
get the feeling of having arrived somewhere only fleetingly touched by La
Serenissima.
